The southwest monsoon has arrived in Kerala eight days ahead of its scheduled onset date, marking the earliest arrival in the last 16 years, with the India Meteorological Department issuing red alerts for several states.

This year's onset is comparable to the early arrivals in 2009 and 2001, when the monsoon reached Kerala on May 23. The monsoon is expected to progress rapidly and reach parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and other states within the next 2-3 days, bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in several other states, including Delhi-NCR, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. The northern limit of the southwest monsoon passes through Karwar, Shivamogga, Hassan, Mysuru in Karnataka and Dharmapuri and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

The early arrival of the monsoon is expected to bring relief to several states that have been experiencing hot and dry weather conditions, and the India Meteorological Department will continue to monitor the progress of the monsoon and issue updates and warnings as necessary.
