Hyderabad Weather: Flood Alert Sounded Ahead of Monsoon

With the IMD issuing a seven-day warning for Karnataka, predicting "widespread" rainfall in nearly all districts until June 17, the situation is being closely monitored, and authorities are working to prevent potential disasters and provide assistance to those in need.

Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has directed officials to prepare district-wise flood action plans by June 30 to prevent potential loss of life and property due to heavy rain and floods during the monsoon, citing predictions of above-normal rainfall.

The minister has sounded a high alert for the flood-prone Godavari and Krishna river basins, urging officials to permanently relocate vulnerable families and considering the construction of Indiramma houses for resettlement. A high-powered committee has been formed to submit a detailed action plan for disaster management, as heavy rain hit parts of Hyderabad, causing severe waterlogging on several main roads.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places over south peninsular India during June 12-15. The early onset of the southwest monsoon brought continuous rainfall across southern and eastern India, contributing to a record average rainfall of 126.7 mm in May 2025. NDRF teams were deployed to clear water in areas like Santosh Nagar and Champapet.

As the Southwest monsoon is expected to become active again starting Thursday, residents are advised to take necessary precautions and stay informed about the latest weather updates. The Telangana government's proactive measures aim to minimize the impact of floods and ensure public safety during the monsoon season.
