PTA SIM Verification: Govt Blocks Cards Issued Against Expired CNICs
The PTA's public advisory and the introduction of a facial recognition system are key components of the government's strategy to prevent identity fraud and enhance national security. By taking these steps, the government aims to protect citizens and prevent the misuse of SIM cards, while also promoting a safer and more secure online environment.

The government has initiated a crackdown on identity fraud and misuse of SIM cards by blocking all Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards issued against expired Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs), in a bid to enhance national security and prevent potential involvement in criminal activities.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) to implement this decision, starting with SIMs issued against CNICs from 2017 or earlier. Additionally, Nadra will introduce a facial recognition system nationwide by December 31, 2025, to further strengthen the verification process. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has also issued a public advisory, urging mobile users to verify SIM ownership and take necessary steps to prevent unauthorized use.
PTA has provided users with two methods to check the number of SIMs registered against their CNIC: sending an SMS with their CNIC number to 668 or visiting the PTA website. Users are advised to block any SIM card found registered in their name that they are not actively using, to avoid potential misuse. This move is part of the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS), which aims to ensure all mobile devices in Pakistan are registered in compliance with national security protocols.
In a separate move, PTA has taken action against 16 YouTube news channels, 31 YouTube video links, and 32 websites for spreading anti-Pakistan propaganda. The authority claims that this content is aimed at undermining national unity and influencing public opinion negatively, and has taken steps to prevent its dissemination.
The government's efforts to curb identity fraud and prevent the misuse of SIM cards are expected to enhance national security and protect citizens from potential involvement in criminal activities. By verifying SIM ownership and taking steps to prevent unauthorized use, mobile users can play a crucial role in supporting these efforts.
