PTA Cracks Down on Illegal Sims with FIA, Seizes Thousands of UK Sims

The crackdown on illegal sims is a significant step towards combating the growing threat to Pakistan's security and economy, and the PTA's appeal to the public to report any illegal sim card sales and activities is a crucial part of the effort to prevent the misuse of foreign SIM cards and protect citizens from online predators and financial scams.

Updated :

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) have conducted joint raids in several cities, seizing thousands of illegal international sim cards, including over 7,000 in Multan alone, in a bid to combat the growing threat to the country's security and economy.

The raids, which took place in Multan, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, and Karachi, resulted in the recovery of thousands of pre-activated international sims, with many of them being from the UK. The use of these "ghost" SIMs has been linked to a surge in financial scams, online fraud, and potentially even terrorism, as they provide a digital disguise for criminals to operate undetected.

The PTA has appealed to the public to report any illegal sim card sales and activities to help combat the issue, which has raised concerns about the country's digital future and safety. The anonymity of these SIMs allows them to spread disinformation and coordinate illegal activities, and the financial damage caused by these scams affects not only individuals but also the country's economy.

The misuse of foreign SIM cards, particularly those registered in the UK, has become a significant challenge for law enforcement and society in Pakistan. Online predators exploit the anonymity afforded by these SIMs to engage in child pornography, fraud, and other illegal activities, and the ease of obtaining pre-activated SIMs in the UK, without proper identity documentation, has created a conduit for nefarious elements.

The situation has highlighted the need for cooperation between international and local authorities to address the problem, and for a total change in approach to tackle the issue, including working with other countries to stop these SIMs from entering Pakistan and imposing serious consequences on shops selling them.
