The 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has begun in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, bringing together leaders from around the world to discuss ways to address the pressing issue of climate change, as Pakistan faces devastating monsoon season.

The conference is expected to focus on key issues such as loss and damage, renewable energy, and carbon pricing. Developed countries are under pressure to provide financial support to developing countries to help them adapt to the effects of climate change. The use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, is also a major topic of discussion.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on world leaders to take bold action to address the climate crisis, while US President Joe Biden has announced a new initiative to help developing countries transition to renewable energy. Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a high-level delegation to the conference, led by Vice Premier Han Zheng.

Meanwhile, in Pakistan, the monsoon season has caused widespread devastation, claiming at least 234 lives, injuring 596 people, and damaging 826 homes since June 26. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that the unrelenting downpour has also resulted in the death of 203 livestock, displacement of families, and disruption of critical infrastructure nationwide.

As the COP27 conference continues, world leaders have a unique opportunity to come together and agree on a plan of action to address the climate crisis, which is having a devastating impact on countries like Pakistan. The conference is expected to see a significant increase in the use of renewable energy sources and increased ambition from world leaders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
