Lahore Weather: Heatwave Persists Amidst Monsoon Forecast
The monsoon rains are expected to continue in Punjab until July 25, with a high possibility of increased water flow in rivers, prompting a flood alert for rivers and canals in the province. A severe heatwave continues to grip Lahore, with temperatures expected to reach 34°C and humidity levels rising, despite an impending monsoon system that is unlikely to bring significant rainfall to the city in the next few days.
The fourth monsoon spell is forecasted to bring strong winds, rain, and thundershowers to various regions, including Rawalpindi, Murree, Faisalabad, and parts of southern Punjab, from July 20-25. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued a flood alert and warned of rising river levels, prompting emergency measures and public safety protocols. Meanwhile, other parts of the country are expected to experience rain, wind, and thundershowers, while hot and humid weather will continue in most areas.
In related news, at least three tourists were killed and 15 went missing after floods triggered by heavy rain swept through Gilgit-Baltistan's Babusar area in Diamer district. The government has launched a rescue operation, with hundreds of stranded tourists being rescued and many seeking shelter with local residents. Additionally, three children died and a woman was injured when a roof collapsed due to heavy rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Gujjar Banda area in Madyan of Swat district.
The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of a low-level flood in the Indus River and has instructed administrations to remain on alert. Divisional Commissioner Zaid bin Maqsood has directed all departments to be on high alert, warning of strict action for negligence, and emphasized the activation of early warning systems, mobilization of village-level flood committees, and evacuation of communities residing in riverbeds.
As the monsoon season continues, the government and authorities are taking proactive measures to tackle potential flooding scenarios, with a focus on protecting human lives and enforcing public safety protocols.
