A United Nations University report reveals a 15% increase in climate-related disasters over the past decade, while an Islamabad court orders the blocking of 27 YouTube channels for allegedly airing anti-state content, highlighting the need for urgent action on climate change and responsible media practices.
The UNU report analyzed data from 1980 to 2020 and found that 2020 was the deadliest year on record, with 22,000 deaths attributed to disasters. The majority of disasters occurred in developing countries, with 90% of all disasters related to weather events such as hurricanes, floods, and droughts. The economic cost of disasters has also skyrocketed, with the total economic loss from 2020 disasters estimated at over $130 billion.
In a separate development, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) requested an Islamabad court to block 27 YouTube channels, including those of the PTI, journalists Matiuallah Jan, and Wajahat Khan, for allegedly airing anti-state content and spreading false information. The court ordered the blocking of the channels under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, citing the need to protect state institutions and officials from intimidating and provocative content.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) clarified that a recent media report attributing a judicial order to shut down the YouTube channels was baseless, emphasizing that the court orders were issued on the NCCIA's request, not the FIA's. The FIA urged the public and media to verify news before broadcasting or publishing, as unverified information can cause confusion and misinformation.
As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change and responsible media practices, it is essential for governments, international organizations, and individuals to take immediate action to mitigate the effects of climate change and promote fact-based reporting, ensuring a safer and more informed world for all.
