The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a heatwave alert from June 18 to 22, warning of extremely high temperatures across several regions of Pakistan, including parts of South Punjab, Sindh, Eastern Balochistan, and Southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Cities like Jacobabad, Dadu, Larkana, Sukkur, Khairpur, and Nawabshah in Sindh are expected to be significantly affected by the heatwave. The NDMA has advised the public to take precautionary measures, avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure, stay hydrated, and follow government advisories closely to minimize health risks during this period. At least 935 people have been affected by the heatwave in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this month, with 48 taken to hospitals in critical condition.

Rescue 1122 has established 108 anti-heatwave camps across 34 districts, providing first aid and hydration facilities. The heatwave has caused a spike in forest fires, with 65 incidents reported, mainly in Lower Dir and Abbottabad. The provincial government has issued public safety advisories, urging citizens to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

Climate change is a major concern in Pakistan, with extreme weather events becoming more frequent and severe, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. Meanwhile, in a separate weather-related development, a powerful winter storm is expected to hit the state of Minnesota in the United States, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and low visibility to the region.

The NDMA's heatwave alert serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for extreme weather events, and the need for individuals to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones. As the weather continues to heat up, it is crucial for the public to stay informed and follow the advisories issued by the authorities.
