Murree Development Projects Spark Concerns
The projects' estimated costs are Rs 500 million for the Judicial Complex, Rs 108.86 million for Jhika Gali Bazaar and Chowk remodelling, and Rs 1.683 billion for the Murree Kachehri Chowk expansion, with the latter being a state-of-the-art project, but the concerns of local residents and traders must be addressed to ensure a smooth implementation of these development projects in Murree.

The Murree district authorities have approved three major development projects, including a Judicial Complex, Jhika Gali Bazaar and Chowk remodelling, and Murree Kachehri Chowk expansion, with a total estimated cost of over Rs 2.2 billion, aiming to modernize the area but raising concerns among residents about potential displacement and heritage preservation.
The Judicial Complex will be built on the site of the historic MC High School in Jhika Gali, affecting around 200 students, while the Jhika Gali Bazaar remodelling will acquire 10 additional kanals of land, displacing 40 shops and 1,600 households. Local traders have pledged to resist selling their lands and demanded the withdrawal of Section 4, which authorizes land acquisition.
The administration has assured the public of fair compensation and proper relocation for those affected, but the projects have sparked resistance from local residents, highlighting the need for careful consideration of heritage preservation and community welfare. The Punjab government has approved these projects to enhance infrastructure and improve connectivity in Murree.
The Murree Deputy Commissioner, Zahid Shirazi, has assured that no injustice will be done to shopkeepers and alternative locations will be provided, but local traders have warned of strong protests if the situation is mishandled, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to development and community needs.
