In a move to revamp the education system, the Punjab Textbook and Curriculum Board has introduced significant changes to the 9th class syllabus, allowing students to choose between Urdu or English for seven key subjects, with implementation slated for 2026. This development is part of broader reforms that include the introduction of new subject groups for matriculation students and the establishment of a department for skill development and entrepreneurship.

The new curriculum will offer students more flexibility, with the option to select from seven subjects, including Urdu, mathematics, English, computer science, physics, chemistry, and biology, in either Urdu or English. This change aims to provide students with a more personalized educational experience, aligning with their interests and strengths. Furthermore, the Punjab School Education Department (SED) is introducing four new subject groups for matriculation students: health sciences, agriculture, information technology (IT), and entrepreneurship. These groups are designed to align the curriculum with international standards, offering students more practical and career-oriented options.

The introduction of these new subject groups and the revised syllabus are expected to have a positive impact on the education system in Punjab. Educationist Rana Liaqat has welcomed the changes, noting that they will bring diversity and provide students with more career options. However, he also emphasized the need for the government to upgrade science and IT labs in schools to fully benefit from the new curriculum. The SED has assured that current teachers will be trained in the new curriculum, eliminating the need for additional recruitment, which should help in the smooth implementation of these reforms.
