The federal government has announced public holidays on July 5 and 6 to mark Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his companions, as the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) overhauls its approach to treating depression with a more holistic approach.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to ensure strict law and order during Muharram-related processions and majalis, with enhanced security measures and surveillance to prevent untoward incidents. A comprehensive security plan has been finalised to check miscreants and ensure high-level surveillance during Muharram, with the deployment of the Pakistan Army in all provinces to support civil administration.

The NIMH's new approach to treating depression, dubbed the "NIMH Treatment Guidelines," will emphasize the importance of individualized treatment plans that take into account a patient's unique needs and circumstances. Researchers will also be focusing on the role of lifestyle factors, such as diet, exercise, and sleep, in the development and treatment of depression.

Meanwhile, representatives of different religious groups, including non-Muslims, announced their collective efforts to maintain durable peace and strengthen interfaith harmony in Peshawar. They emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and harmony during the holy month and appealed to the people to promote mutual tolerance and brotherhood.

The new guidelines are expected to be released later this year, and will provide a framework for clinicians to develop more effective treatment plans for patients with depression, while the government's security measures aim to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for all citizens during the 10 Muharram celebrations.
