Muharram Observance Begins in Kashmir During Islamic Month
The government has made arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the Muharram processions, including security, medical facilities, and sanitation, while the National Conference President has called for robust arrangements to facilitate the observance of Youm-e-Ashura, with a focus on uninterrupted civic services and effective crowd management.

The Islamic month of Muharram commenced on June 26 in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a period of grief and spiritual reflection for the Shia Muslim community, with preparations underway in Srinagar, Budgam, and other parts of central and north Kashmir.
Preparations for the observance of Muharram are in full swing, with local youth and volunteers setting up Sabeels, decorating Imam Bargahs, and coordinating logistics for processions. Religious scholars are delivering sermons stressing the values of justice, sacrifice, and unity, while large congregations are expected in Shia-dominated areas. The district administrations are reviewing arrangements for processions, including traffic diversions and medical assistance, to ensure peaceful observance.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced that Muharram processions in Srinagar will follow the same routes as last year, which includes the traditional 8th Muharram procession route from Guru Bazar to Dalgate. This comes after the LG administration lifted a 34-year ban on the procession last year. National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah has called for robust arrangements for the upcoming Muharram-ul-Haram, with a focus on smooth and dignified observance of Youm-e-Ashura.
Dr Abdullah emphasized the need for uninterrupted civic services, round-the-clock healthcare facilities, adequate ration distribution, well-organised transport and ambulance services, and effective crowd and procession management. He also stressed the importance of repairing and maintaining roads and footpaths in Shia-inhabited areas, and acknowledged the government's efforts to facilitate Muharram observances.
The observance of Muharram is a significant event in the Islamic calendar, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala. The month is expected to be marked with solemnity and reflection, with the community coming together to observe the occasion with dignity and respect.
