Muharram Holidays 2025: Telangana Declares July 5-6 Off

The declaration of Muharram holidays in Telangana and other state-specific holidays in July 2025 will enable citizens to participate in various cultural and religious events, while also affecting trading and banking operations across the country.

Updated :

The Telangana government has announced holidays for Muharram, specifically for the 9th and 10th days, which fall on July 5 and 6, 2025, allowing for mourning rituals and community gatherings to take place.

The 10th day, Ashura, is a significant Shia Muslim occasion commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Husayn ibn Ali. As July 6 falls on a Sunday, it will not require an additional day off, as it's a regular weekly holiday. Schools have not issued separate notifications yet, but the government's announcement ensures arrangements can be made for the upcoming holidays.

In addition to Muharram, July 2025 will feature several state-specific holidays, including Bonalu in Telangana, Martyrs' Day in Jammu & Kashmir, and Kharchi Puja in Tripura. Muharram will be observed on either July 6 or 7, and it will be a gazetted holiday in many parts of the country, potentially affecting banking operations. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed for trading on Muharram.

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain shut during the morning session on the day of Muharram, but trading will resume in the evening session. The total number of non-trading days nationally in July will be eight, which are regular weekend closures. Other notable holidays in July include Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl Day (MHIP Day) in Mizoram, Martyrs' Day in Jammu & Kashmir, and Bhanu Jayanti in Sikkim.

The holiday date for Muharram depends on the sighting of the moon, with July 6 being the official date, but shifting to July 7 if the moon is not sighted. As a result, schools, banks, government offices, and stock markets will be closed across India on the designated holiday date, allowing citizens to observe the Islamic New Year.
