Muharram, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year, will be observed as a public holiday in India on either July 6 or 7, 2025, depending on the sighting of the moon, affecting banking operations and stock market trading.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed for trading on the day of Muharram, while the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will be shut during the morning session but will resume trading in the evening session. This holiday is one of the four sacred months in Islam and is observed as a public holiday across the country, with all schools, banks, government offices, and stock markets remaining closed.

In addition to Muharram, July 2025 will feature several other state-specific holidays, including Bonalu in Telangana, Martyrs' Day in Jammu & Kashmir, and Kharchi Puja in Tripura. Other public holidays in July include Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl Day (MHIP Day) on July 6, Martyrs' Day on July 13, Bhanu Jayanti on July 13, Harela on July 16, Ker Puja on July 19, Bonalu on July 21, Haryali Teej on July 27, and Shaheed Udham Singh's Martyrdom Day on July 31.

The exact date of Muharram will be confirmed based on lunar sighting, and Indians are advised to stay updated with the latest news to plan accordingly, as the holiday may shift to July 7 if the new moon isn't sighted accordingly.
