Weather Karachi Braces for Heatwave
The heatwave has highlighted the need for urban greening and tree plantation drives to combat the urban heat island effect, as well as improvements in public infrastructure to mitigate the impacts of extreme heat. As the city struggles to cope with the heat, it is essential to prioritize public health and take proactive measures to address the challenges posed by climate change.

A severe heatwave has gripped Sindh, Pakistan, with temperatures soaring to 46°C in areas like Mithi and Badin, prompting the Pakistan Meteorological Department to warn of extreme heat and dry conditions for the next two days. Karachi, the largest city in Sindh, sweltered in 39°C heat with 60% humidity on Monday, with the Met Office warning of continued hot and humid conditions.
The heatwave is expected to persist, with temperatures remaining high, ranging from 36 to 39°C during the day and between 29 and 31°C at night. Health experts have advised citizens to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and limit strenuous activities to avoid heat-related illnesses. The PMD has also advised people in Sindh to take precautions against the heat and urged residents in dust-prone areas to stay indoors to avoid respiratory issues.
The heatwave is part of a broader trend of rising temperatures observed across southern Pakistan in recent years, raising concerns about the impacts of climate change on urban life. Karachi's scorching summers are becoming increasingly unbearable due to frequent power outages, water shortages, and lack of shaded public areas. The city lacks long-term planning to combat the heat, and there is an urgent need for public awareness campaigns, cooling centres, and improvements in electricity and water infrastructure.
As the heatwave continues to affect daily life, especially for low-income residents, students, and the elderly, authorities must treat extreme heat as a recurring public health crisis, not just a seasonal inconvenience. A mild sea breeze may offer some relief by midweek, but until then, citizens are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy.
