Pakistan's National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced the country's first digital identity card, allowing citizens to store their ID on smartphones through the Pak ID Mobile Application and access government services seamlessly.

The launch of the digital ID card is part of NADRA's Silver Jubilee celebration and marks a significant milestone in Pakistan's digital future. The new system, implemented under the World Bank-funded Digital Economy Enhancement Project, will include digital verification processes for enhanced authentication. This initiative promises to streamline services and improve security for millions of citizens, providing a more convenient and secure option for accessing government services.

The digital identity card will be integrated into the Pak ID mobile app, eliminating the need for physical ID cards. A pilot project for a fully digital identity will be launched on August 14, 2025. The Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, highlighted NADRA's extensive reach, ensuring accessibility for remote regions and overseas Pakistanis. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised NADRA's efforts to empower citizens through data integration and artificial intelligence, promoting inclusivity and economic growth.

The launch event featured a documentary and book launch, commemorating NADRA's 25-year journey. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated NADRA and praised its role in providing a unique identity to citizens, promoting social contract and digital solutions. The authority's founding chairman, retired Maj Gen Zahid Ehsan, reflected on NADRA's progress and commitment to innovation and excellence.

The introduction of the digital identity card is a significant step towards Pakistan's digital future, aiming to improve the lives of citizens by providing easier access to government services and enhancing security. As the country continues to embrace digital solutions, NADRA's efforts are expected to have a positive impact on the nation's development and growth.
