Karachi's Housing Crisis Amidst Ramadan Preparations

As the city struggles to provide affordable housing, community-led initiatives and alternative housing models may offer a solution, while the city's traffic management plans aim to mitigate congestion during Ramadan, highlighting the need for a multifaceted approach to addressing Karachi's urban challenges.

Updated :

Karachi's housing shortage is a pressing concern, with a significant shortage of affordable housing options for low-income families, and the city's population is expected to reach 24 million by 2035, exacerbating the issue, while the city also faces severe traffic jams as people rush to markets for Ramadan preparations.

The government's current approach to addressing the housing issue is to promote high-density, high-rise apartments, inspired by the Chinese model, however, architect and urban planner Arif Hasan argues that this approach is not feasible or sustainable for Karachi's housing needs. Research has shown that affordable housing is not just a social right but a key factor in fighting poverty, providing economic benefits, social mobility, and respect in the community.

In contrast, informal housing settlements in Karachi, such as katchi abadis, have been built by informal developers without government subsidies, and their residents have managed to improve their neighborhoods through community-led efforts. This model of housing development could be a more effective and sustainable solution for addressing Karachi's housing needs. Meanwhile, the city administration has planned special measures to improve traffic flow and prevent congestion during Ramazan, particularly during Iftar hours.

The city's housing crisis requires a more nuanced approach that takes into account the needs and capabilities of low-income families, focusing on providing affordable, sustainable, and community-led housing solutions that prioritize the well-being and dignity of residents, and with Ramadan approaching, the city's traffic management plans will be put to the test as people prepare for the holy month.
