A Smarter Way to Stay Informed

Today Weather Brings Flood Watch to Northern Rockies

The Flood Watch and avalanche warnings are a result of the rapid rise in temperatures, causing rivers and streams to swell, and snowmelt runoff to increase, leading to potentially hazardous conditions. Residents should be prepared for strong winds, icy conditions, and potential flooding, and stay up to date with the latest weather forecast.

Updated :

Rain and snowmelt are expected to continue in the Northern Rockies and Pacific Northwest, leading to flooding in low-lying areas, with mild temperatures causing snowmelt runoff and increasing the risk of flooding. A Flood Watch is in effect for several counties, including Flathead, Granite, Lake, Lincoln, and Missoula, due to the risk of flooding from rain and/or snowmelt and/or ice jam.

The weather forecast predicts rainfall of 1-2 inches in locations along the state line, with higher elevations receiving up to 3 inches by Monday night. Valleys below 3000 feet have a 70% chance of receiving at least half an inch of precipitation, leading to excessive runoff and potential flooding of creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas. Avalanche warnings are also in effect for several mountain ranges, including the Bitterroot, Whitefish, and Selkirk mountains, due to heavy snowfall, strong winds, and rain.

High wind warnings are also in effect for several areas, including the Madison River Valley, Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains, and Livingston Area-Beartooth Foothills, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph. Active weather continues in Missoula and Kalispell, with both areas above normal in precipitation and snowfall. February has been water-wise, but recent snow melt and rain led to Avalanche Warnings and a Flood Watch, which expires today.

Montana residents should prepare for strong winds and potential icy conditions as warmer temperatures bring warmer weather to the state. The rest of the week is expected to be drier with occasional moisture on Tuesday, with daytime highs in the 40s and 50s and overnight lows around the freezing mark. Residents are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
