Himachal Pradesh Tribe Practices Polyandry Tradition
The practice of polyandry in Himachal Pradesh's Hatti tribe is a rare instance of a traditional ceremony still being practiced today, with the community working to preserve its cultural heritage and unique customs.

Two brothers from Himachal Pradesh's Hatti tribe, Pradeep and Kapil Negi, have married the same woman, Sunita Chauhan, in a traditional ceremony known as Jodidara, highlighting the continued practice of polyandry in the region.
The ceremony, which took place in Shillai village, was attended by hundreds of guests and featured folk music and dance. The practice of polyandry, where one woman marries multiple men, is rooted in preserving ancestral land and family unity, and is still legally recognised in parts of Himachal Pradesh. The Hatti community, which was granted Scheduled Tribe status three years ago, has a long history of practicing polyandry, and it is also practiced in other parts of the state and in Uttarakhand.
The brothers, Pradeep and Kapil Negi, stated that they followed the tradition publicly as they are proud of it and it was a joint decision. Sunita Chauhan, the bride, said she was aware of the tradition and made her decision without any pressure. The practice of polyandry is seen as a way to preserve ancestral land and family unity, and is recognised under Himachal Pradesh's revenue laws.
The ceremony has brought attention to the unique cultural practices of the Hatti tribe and the continued relevance of polyandry in modern times. As the community continues to preserve its traditions, it also highlights the importance of understanding and respecting the cultural diversity of different regions.
