Rob Walter Appointed New Zealand Coach
With his extensive coaching experience and proven track record, Rob Walter is well-placed to lead the Blackcaps to success in upcoming tournaments, and his appointment has been welcomed by New Zealand Cricket.
New Zealand Cricket has appointed Rob Walter as the new head coach of the men's national team, with the 49-year-old signing a three-year contract to lead the team through multiple World Cups.
Walter, a former South Africa white-ball coach, will take over the role in mid-June and has expressed his excitement and privilege at the opportunity to work with the Blackcaps. He has a proven track record, having led South Africa to the 2024 T20 World Cup final and the 2023 World Cup semi-finals.
The appointment of Walter follows the departure of Gary Stead, who left the role after seven years. Walter's first assignment will be a tour to Zimbabwe in July, and he will be tasked with leading the team through the 2027 ODI World Cup and the 2026 and 2028 T20 World Cups.
Walter's experience and success with South Africa made him a favourite for the job, and his continued living in New Zealand during his time with South Africa was seen as a major advantage. He has cited the team's success and his desire to work with talented players and staff as key factors in his decision to take on the role.
