ITR Filing Deadline Extended to September 15 Today Date
The decision to extend the deadline is intended to provide a smoother and more accurate filing experience for taxpayers, particularly salaried employees and other categories of taxpayers who were required to file their returns by July 31, 2025. The new deadline provides ample time for compliance with the revised ITR forms and legislative changes.

The Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2024-25 from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025, due to significant revisions in ITR forms and system development.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has cited the extensive changes introduced in the notified ITRs, including structural and content revisions, as the reason for the extension. The new forms allow salaried individuals to report long-term capital gains up to Rs 1.25 lakh under ITR-1, and mandate reporting capital gains separately based on whether they arose before or after July 23, 2024.
The extension aims to provide more time for taxpayers to comply with the enhanced reporting requirements and legislative changes. The CBDT has notified all seven ITR forms for AY 2025-26, incorporating structural updates and simplifications. The changes in ITR forms require modifications to be made in return filing utilities and the back-end system.
The extension is expected to mitigate concerns raised by stakeholders and provide adequate time for compliance, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the return filing process. Taxpayers can now file their returns by September 15, 2025, without incurring any penalties or fines.
