Storm Warning Issued for Catalonia and Murcia as Heavy Rain and Cold Snap Loom

Updated :

The Spanish regions of Catalonia and Murcia are bracing for a double storm punch, with a heavy rain and storm (DANA) alert issued for the Catalan coast, Barcelona, and surrounding areas from Wednesday, November 13, and a cold snap expected in Murcia from the same day. The severe weather system is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and a significant drop in temperatures, prompting authorities to advise citizens to stay informed and follow safety recommendations.

According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall totals, reaching up to 200 mm in some areas, with a yellow alert issued for the central Catalan coast, including Barcelona, from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday morning. The storm is not expected to be as severe as the one that caused significant damage in Valencia, but its effects may still vary. In Murcia, a cold snap is expected, with frequent showers and a rapid drop in temperatures midweek. The region's Aemet warning highlights widespread and persistent rain, light to moderate winds from the north, and strong intervals in the Campo de Cartagena.

In related news, another storm system is expected to hit Spain's western parts of Andalucia and northern Mediterranean region from Thursday, bringing heavy rainfall and potential snowfall to the country. The low-pressure system may also affect areas including Malaga and Costa del Sol, the Sierra de la Nieves, and Sierra Tejeda mountain ranges, although the exact timing and impact of the storm are still uncertain. Local weather expert José Luis Escudero predicts heavy rains along the Mediterranean coast and Alboran Sea coast, as well as snow in the Sierra de la Nieves and Sierra Tejeda mountain ranges.

Citizens in both Catalonia and Murcia are advised to stay informed and follow official guidelines to ensure their safety during the severe weather. Authorities have warned of potential disruptions to daily life, including flooded areas and hazardous road conditions, and are encouraging citizens to exercise caution and follow any necessary safety instructions.
