Bollywood Film Emergency Opens Strong

Updated :

Kangana Ranaut's latest film 'Emergency', a historical political drama, has opened with a decent collection of over Rs 2.35 crore on its first day at the box office, surpassing expectations and outperforming Ajay Devgn's 'Azaad'. The film, which was initially set to release in September 2024, has finally hit theaters in January 2025, and its debut has sparked interest among audiences.

The film, which marks Kangana Ranaut's maiden solo directorial venture, has achieved her biggest opening in five years. The movie's success can be attributed to Kangana's star status and the compelling political narrative, despite low-key promotional efforts. The cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and others, has effectively portrayed key figures from the Emergency period under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, adding to the film's historical significance.

However, the film has received criticism for its historical inaccuracies and messy retelling of the life and times of Indira Gandhi. The screenplay is riddled with broad strokes, making it difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction. The film's supporting cast struggles to elevate the material, which is weighed down by shoddy acting and a lack of attention to period detail. The cinematography is the only redeeming aspect of the film, handled by Tetsuo Nagata.

The film serves as a cautionary tale on how not to make a biographical drama, especially one that tackles contemporary events. Despite its shortcomings, 'Emergency' has opened strong at the box office, and it remains to be seen how it will perform in the coming days. The film's success or failure will be a significant indicator of the audience's appetite for historical dramas and biopics in Bollywood.
