Pakistan Braces for Cold Wave as Widespread Rain and Snowfall Forecast

Updated :

Pakistan is poised for a significant drop in temperatures, with a cold wave predicted to grip the country from December 8, bringing with it snowfall in Murree and other mountainous areas, and widespread rain in upper parts of the country and central Punjab. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned of a westerly wave, leading to a cold wave and a significant temperature drop in various regions.

According to the PMD, day temperatures are expected to drop 4-6 degrees Celsius below normal in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, with a 5-7°C drop in Balochistan and Sindh. Frost is likely to develop over plains, making outdoor activities hazardous, especially during night and morning hours. The Met Office has advised farmers to manage their activities accordingly and citizens to take necessary precautions to avoid exposure to harsh weather conditions.

Moderate rain, thunderstorm, and snowfall are forecasted in Chitral, Dir, Swat, and other areas from December 7 to 11, while other parts of the country, including Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, can expect light to moderate rain with snowfall on December 7 and 8.

The authorities have been advised by the PMD to remain alert and take necessary measures to prevent any untoward situations, particularly in the northern areas. Tourists and travelers visiting mountainous areas have been urged to exercise caution during the period. A significant rain spell is expected to hit various parts of the country, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad.

As Pakistan prepares for the cold wave, the Met Office has predicted a colder and drier air mass to prevail over the country, with temperatures set to drop significantly. This is expected to be the first major rain spell of the winter season. With these forecasts indicating severe weather conditions, the authorities have initiated necessary preparations, ensuring that support systems are put in place to mitigate any possible discomfort caused by the cold wave.
