Gilgit Baltistan Protests Grand Jirga Injustice
Residents of the Diamer district in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan have voiced strong opposition to the recent Grand Jirga, citing concerns over financial mismanagement and exploitation of the region's natural resources for personal gain, rather than addressing critical issues such as education and development.
The Grand Jirga, attended by high-profile figures including the Chief Minister and Commander FCNA, has been criticized for serving the interests of a select few, exacerbating the community's problems. Residents argue that the event has failed to address pressing issues, instead allowing the exploitation of the region's natural resources, including forests and land. The community is demanding collective action to safeguard their land and resources, ensuring that the district's wealth benefits future generations.
In contrast, the Grand Jirga held in Chilas, Gilgit-Baltistan, aimed to address issues related to law and order, development, health, and education. Participants, including GB Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan and FCNA Commander Maj Gen Imtiaz Hussain Gillani, agreed to work towards maintaining law and order and fostering development. Maj Gen Gillani emphasized the importance of local community involvement in development, suggesting community-based systems to empower people to contribute to development initiatives. However, residents remain skeptical, highlighting the need for tangible actions to address their concerns.
The situation in Gilgit-Baltistan highlights the need for inclusive and representative decision-making processes that prioritize the needs of the local community. As the region continues to face challenges related to development and resource management, it is essential that the voices of its residents are heard and their concerns addressed. The effective management of Gilgit-Baltistan's natural resources and the resolution of its development challenges require a collaborative and community-driven approach.
