Pakistan's PCB Ensures Gaddafi Stadium Renovations

Updated :

The Punjab cabinet has rejected a proposal to rename Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, while the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is pushing forward with renovations to ensure the stadium is ready for the upcoming Champions Trophy, despite initial concerns about delays and uncertainty over hosting the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

The proposal to rename the stadium was put forward by the Bank of Punjab (BoP) after acquiring exclusive naming rights under the terms of the Stadium Nomenclature Rights Agreement signed with the PCB. However, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed reservations about the proposal, leading to its decline by the Punjab cabinet. Meanwhile, renovations at the stadium are back on track, with over 250 workers working "day and night" to complete the project on time.

The renovations aim to transform the stadium into a world-class facility, with a new hospitality enclosure, improved access, and enhanced spectator experience. The project has been underway for three years, with the PCB insisting from the start that it would be completed on time. Recent updates have silenced speculation that the tournament might be moved to the UAE, and the stadium is now a hub of activity with diggers, power tools, and welding kits being used extensively.

The uncertainty over hosting the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan still persists due to incomplete stadiums and security concerns. The tournament, scheduled to start on February 19, may be relocated to the UAE, where the ICC has already expressed willingness to host the event. Key issues include unfinished construction, lack of safety standards, and security threats in Pakistan, which has raised concerns among cricket authorities and former players.

The ICC is expected to announce a decision on the tournament's location in the next few days. The PCB's efforts to complete the renovations on time are crucial in ensuring that Pakistan can host the tournament, and the country's cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the final decision.
