Samsung has launched three new foldable smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, to compete with Chinese rivals Honor and Oppo, as the company aims to regain its share of the global foldable phone market.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a flagship model that features a super thin design, measuring 8.9mm when closed and 4.2mm when unfolded, with a 6.5-inch cover screen and an 8-inch main display. It also features premium cameras and a 4,400mAh battery, although the battery capacity is limited compared to other devices. The Galaxy Z Flip 7, on the other hand, has a 4.1-inch cover screen and a 6.9-inch main display, and features a 50-megapixel main camera and 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor.

Samsung's share of the global foldable phone market has slipped to 45% from 54% a year earlier, and the company is focusing on AI capabilities and software to differentiate its devices. The company hopes that the new foldable phones will bring foldables into the mainstream, but faces stiff competition from Chinese manufacturers such as Oppo and Huawei, which are pushing the boundaries of innovation with features like stylus support, silicon-carbon batteries, and trifold designs.

China's investment in smartphones is leaving big brands playing catch-up, with the Chinese government providing significant subsidies to its tech companies, allowing them to invest heavily in research and development. This has led to a surge in innovation in China, with the country now leading the world in consumer tech. The US and EU are struggling to keep up, with America's CHIPS Act intended to reduce reliance on foreign states under threat from a Trump presidency.

As the global foldable phone market continues to evolve, Samsung will need to innovate and differentiate its devices to stay competitive. With the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, the company is taking a step in the right direction, but it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to regain its share of the market.
