A 36-year-old pediatrician from Oklahoma, Dr. Neha Gupta, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her 4-year-old daughter, Aria, whose death was initially reported as a drowning accident in a rental home in Florida.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office investigation revealed that the child's autopsy showed no water in her lungs, contradicting the claim of drowning. Instead, the medical examiner found signs of asphyxiation by smothering, including cuts in the mouth and bruising on the cheeks. The child's stomach was also empty, despite the mother's claim that she had eaten dinner several hours before the incident.

Gupta had told authorities that she found her daughter submerged in the pool at 3:20 a.m. and attempted to remove her before calling paramedics. However, investigators believe that Gupta staged the death to conceal the killing. The arrest warrant states that Gupta "attempted to conceal the killing of the deceased victim by staging an accidental drowning."

Gupta's lawyer claims that she is a victim of a "terrible tragedy" and that the charges are unfounded. Gupta is currently being held without bond in Oklahoma, and Florida authorities are seeking her return to face the murder charge.
