A freak hailstorm hit the village of Puigpunyent in Mallorca, covering streets in up to two inches of ice, as the island experiences a prolonged period of wet weather with little change in the forecast for the next few days.

The hailstorm, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning, was part of unstable weather in the area leading up to Easter, and left several roads closed, prompting the local council to advise residents to avoid traveling until the roads are safe. The storm also caused air traffic delays at Palma Airport, with some early flights delayed.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain and storms across the islands, with accumulations of up to 30mm in an hour. The weather is expected to be stormy, with warnings in place for the entire period, and temperatures are expected to drop by 5º, with maximum temperatures ranging from 13-20º, below the usual 19-21º for this time of year.

The situation is being closely monitored, especially in light of the severe floods in Lanzarote, which have caused widespread damage and disruption. However, Aemet forecasts more stable weather for Holy Thursday, with clear skies and temperatures ranging from 15-20 degrees.

The hailstorm and heavy rain have brought significant disruptions to the island, but the weather is expected to stabilize soon, bringing relief to the residents and tourists alike.
