Mamata Banerjee Seeks Calm Amid Waqf Law Violence
The Waqf Amendment Bill has sparked widespread protests and violence, with many Muslims fearing discrimination and the opposition accusing the federal government of targeting the community. The situation in Murshidabad district remains tense, with the state government and central forces working to maintain law and order and prevent further violence.

Violence erupted in West Bengal's Murshidabad district over the Waqf Amendment Bill, resulting in three deaths and over 150 arrests, prompting the deployment of Central Armed Forces in affected areas.
The Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces after the violence broke out, with multiple houses and vehicles being targeted and set on fire. The police and BSF have been working to maintain law and order in the affected areas. The violence has left many families in a state of fear and uncertainty, with some seeking justice for their loved ones, including Pinki Das, who lost her husband and father-in-law to a mob attack, and Selima Bibi, who is seeking justice for her husband's death in police firing.
The Waqf Amendment Bill, passed earlier this month, has sparked concerns among Muslims that it discriminates against them. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed for calm, stating that the bill will not be implemented in the state, which is home to 25 million Muslims. The opposition has accused the federal government of targeting Muslims, while the ruling BJP claims the amendments aim to bring transparency and combat corruption in waqf governance.
The situation was further intensified by a rally held by the BJP in Kolkata, demanding CM Mamata Banerjee's resignation and an NIA probe. The TMC alleged that the violence was orchestrated by outsiders allowed by the BSF. A total of 273 people have been arrested, including 155 more who were arrested after the situation was contained by central forces and police.
As the situation remains tense, the affected families and communities are waiting for justice and calm to be restored. The deployment of central forces and the efforts of the state government to maintain law and order are crucial in preventing further violence and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
