Mahrang Baloch Arrest Sparks Outrage in Balochistan
The arrest of Mahrang Baloch has raised concerns about the legality of her detention and the human rights situation in Balochistan. The case highlights the need for international support for the peaceful resistance movement in the province and the importance of recognizing the courage and tenacity of Baloch women.

Mahrang Baloch, leader of the peaceful resistance movement in Balochistan, was arrested by Pakistani authorities, sparking widespread protests and raising questions about the legality of her detention under the Maintenance of Public Order Act.
The arrest of Mahrang Baloch is part of a larger crackdown on members of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), which is leading a non-violent resistance campaign against human rights violations by Pakistan's security forces. The province of Balochistan is economically backward, with the wealth generated from its rich mineral resources not being shared with the local people. Mahrang has been a vocal critic of enforced disappearances, which have been a major issue in Balochistan.
Mahrang's life experiences share similarities with those of Rigoberta Menchú Tum, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for her efforts to protect the rights of native Mayan people in Guatemala. Mahrang's father was abducted and killed, and her brother was subjected to detention. Despite her courage, Mahrang faces significant challenges in getting sustained international support due to the lack of economic resources and a commanding presence in media.
The Balochistan High Court has disposed of a petition seeking the release of Mahrang Baloch, directing the petitioner to approach the home department for her release. The court converted the constitutional petition into a representation and sent it to the Balochistan home secretary for processing. The petition was filed by Nadia Baloch, Mahrang's sister, challenging the detention of Mahrang and other activists under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance.
It is time for women's movements worldwide to recognize the courage and tenacity of Baloch women, including Mahrang, and push the Pakistani government to initiate a negotiated settlement in Balochistan. The international community must take notice of the human rights violations in Balochistan and support the peaceful resistance movement led by Mahrang and the BYC.
