Quetta Protests Erupt Over Mahrang Baloch's Detention

The case of Mahrang Baloch has sparked widespread protests and criticism, with many calling for her release and an end to alleged human rights abuses in Balochistan. As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that the fate of Mahrang and the BYC will have significant implications for the region and beyond.

The Balochistan High Court has disposed of a petition seeking the release of Dr Mahrang Baloch, chief organiser of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), by converting it into a representation to be processed by the Balochistan home secretary. Mahrang's sister, Nadia Baloch, had challenged her detention under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, which was imposed after clashes with police during a sit-in against alleged enforced disappearances.

The BYC had staged a sit-in on March 21, which led to Mahrang's arrest the next day, along with 150 others. The organisation has since held rallies in 20 towns and cities of Balochistan, including Quetta, demanding Mahrang's release and the release of other arrested workers and leaders. However, a rally in Quetta was thwarted by heavy police deployment. The participants have been vocal about their demands, seeking justice and an end to what they claim are unjust detentions.

Mahrang's case has garnered significant attention, with the UN expressing concern over her detention. Her lawyers have criticised the court's decision, calling it a "refusal of justice" and a "complete abdication of responsibility" by the justice system. Mahrang, a 32-year-old trainee surgeon, has been accused of terrorism, sedition, and murder, and will remain in detention for at least 30 days, renewable three times under Pakistani law.

The situation in Quetta remains tense, with supporters of Mahrang and the BYC continuing to demand her release. The Balochistan High Court's decision has been met with widespread criticism, and it remains to be seen how the provincial government will respond to the representation. As the situation unfolds, the people of Quetta and beyond wait with bated breath for a resolution to this contentious issue.
