Smog Forces Closure of Punjab Motorways, Travelers Advised to Stay Safe

Updated :

Punjab's severe smog has forced authorities to close major motorways, bringing daily life to a standstill in the province. Motorways M-2, M-3, M-4, and M-5 have been shut down in a bid to protect commuters from hazardous air quality conditions.

The unprecedented step has been taken in response to worsening air pollution levels, exacerbated by the prevailing smog. Air Quality Index (AQI) readings have hit alarming levels, with Lahore, the province's capital and the world's most polluted city, recording a staggering AQI of 1,537. This has prompted the government to take drastic measures to safeguard public health, including the closure of public parks, zoos, playgrounds, and museums, as well as the shutdown of schools for the next two weeks until November 17.

In an effort to mitigate the situation, the government has mobilized the police force to assist in anti-smog initiatives. A statewide campaign has led to a reduction in AQI levels, as a result of efforts to impound smoke-emitting vehicles, issue fines to those emitting pollutants, and register cases against brick kilns and factories responsible for excessive smoke emissions. Motorway Police have also advised the public to exercise caution and travel during daylight hours, avoid over-speeding, and maintain a safe distance between vehicles. "It is imperative for citizens to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travel until the air quality improves," warned Syed Imran Ahmad, Motorway Police Spokesperson. "We urge everyone to remain indoors, especially children and vulnerable individuals, to minimize exposure to hazardous air pollution."

The Punjab government has also launched a number of helipline services, allowing citizens to report air pollution complaints and receive advice on safety precautions. Anyone seeking more information or assistance can dial 130.

The Unicef has expressed concern over the alarming impact of air pollution on children's health, emphasizing the need for urgent action to protect vulnerable populations. As authorities work to contain the smog situation, they urge citizens to join forces in ensuring their safety and the well-being of those most affected. The outcome of these efforts will be closely monitored, with hopes that the situation will be brought under control, and breathing becomes easier for the people of Punjab again.
