Punjab Locks Down to Combat Severe Smog, Cracking Down on Polluters
The Punjab government has taken a stringent measure to combat the severe smog affecting Lahore and Multan, announcing a three-day lockdown starting immediately. The lockdown will suspend activities such as construction, brick kilns, and dine-in restaurants from 5 pm, till Sunday evening. In an effort to alleviate the situation, the government has set up a 1373 helpline to report issues related to smog.
The closure comes as the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore has reached hazardous levels, with readings of 780. According to reports, the provincial government aims to ensure the availability of medicines during this time. The primary goal of the lockdown is to control the smog and support the ongoing 'Detox Lahore' campaign, which has seen increased efforts to prevent environmental violations. Since the beginning of the anti-smog campaign, 2407 individuals have been arrested, 2990 cases registered, and over 27,301 people fined.
The efforts have shown some results, with the last 24 hours witnessing 49 cases registered, 7 individuals arrested, and fines totaling 2 million rupees imposed on 439 people and 36 warnings issued. The crackdown involved 27 cases of crop residue burning, 327 vehicles emitting excessive smoke, 6 industrial activities causing pollution, 11 brick kiln-related cases, and 6 other violations.
Lahore, once amongst the world's cleanest cities, has slipped to second place in the global pollution rankings, behind New Delhi, which has claimed the top spot. The provincial government plans to take up the issue with the Indian government through diplomatic channels, as officials attribute some of the pollution to India's pollution. The outcome is visible with residents complaining of eye irritation, breathing difficulties, and other health problems. Medical professionals stress the importance of taking urgent action to mitigate pollution, especially with the current severe smog impacting air quality.
As Punjab awaits relief from the smog, experts are urging residents to take precautions by limiting outdoor activities and using air purifiers. Despite ongoing efforts of the provincial government, authorities continue to wait for a break in the weather to alleviate the crisis and remain cautious to monitor the deteriorating situation in Lahore and Multan.
