Punjab Police Steps Up Anti-Smog Drive Amid Hazardous Pollution Levels

Updated :

In an effort to combat the rising smog levels in the province, the Punjab police organized a seminar on smog awareness at the Police Training College Chung in Lahore. The event aimed to educate in-training police personnel on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for preventing smog, including precautions, measures, and strategies for effective protection.

The seminar was attended by the Commandant, senior officers, and experts, who highlighted the importance of enforcing smog control measures across the province. IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar has directed the expedited crackdown on highways, industrial areas, and agricultural sites. In the past 24 hours alone, a total of 14 cases were registered, 10 individuals arrested, and fines totaling 736,000 rupees imposed on 421 people. This year, the police have registered 1,793 cases, arrested 1,692 suspects, and imposed fines exceeding 31.3 million rupees on 18,907 individuals.

The Punjab government has also taken proactive measures to combat the smog issue. Educational institutions in 18 districts have been closed due to hazardous air quality index (AQI) levels, which recently reached 1,165 in Lahore. To mitigate the impact of smog, wearing masks has been made mandatory, and 50% of public and private offices have been advised to operate with work-from-home arrangements. Furthermore, a ban on heavy vehicles has been imposed, and arrangements have been made for the supply of essential items. The provincial government is committed to controlling air pollution and ensuring public health.

As the situation continues to unfold, the Punjab police stands at the forefront of efforts to combat smog pollution. With a strong message of awareness and enforcement, they aim to create a cleaner and healthier environment for its citizens. The upcoming days will be crucial in determining the effectiveness of the government's anti-smog drive, but for now, authorities are optimistic about their prospects in mitigating the impact of smog on public health.
