Lahore Grapples with Catastrophic Smog, Amidst Rising Health Concerns

Updated :

Lahore, the crown jewel of Pakistan, has been shrouded in a thick layer of hazardous smog, plunging its air quality to an alarming 1160 AQI, categorized as "very hazardous." The severe degradation of air quality has compelled the authorities to take drastic measures, including sealing shuttered businesses and apprehending individuals flouting the law. The Punjab Police, under the guidance of IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar, has embarked on a concerted campaign to prohibit polluting activities and penalize those found guilty.

As the situation continues to unfold, authorities have raised the stakes against violators, sealing 75 shops, salons, restaurants, and several wedding halls for violating the 8 PM closure ordinances. Enforcement efforts, coupled with anti-smog operations, have led to the arrest of 7 individuals, with 49 cases registered, and 439 fines levied. Additionally, 556 vehicles have been impounded for infringing smog regulations, while 160,000 vehicles have been seized throughout the province. The endeavor has led to the imposition of 2,407 arrests, 2,994 cases, and fines amounting to Rs63.7 million. Furthermore, 1469 warnings have been issued to individuals during the crackdown. The ongoing struggle against air pollution has culminated in Lahore emerging as the second most polluted city globally, eclipsed only by New Delhi, with an alarming AQI of 780. The dismal air quality index paints a grim picture of shattered health, with citizens complaining of severe eye irritation and breathing difficulties. Dire circumstances have necessitated governments closures, responding to protesters and necessitating a pattern of semi-essential work arrangements with compulsory offline safety measures. Educational facilities remain shut, and under existing working circumstances dangerous conditions have delayed definitive commonly combined businesses.
