A devastating hotel fire in the Bolu mountains of Turkey has claimed the lives of 79 people, sparking widespread grief and prompting a national outcry over fire safety measures. The disaster, one of the deadliest in Turkey's history, has led to the detention of 11 individuals, including the hotel owner, as investigations into the tragedy continue.

The Grand Kartal Hotel, a 12-storey building with 238 registered guests, was engulfed in flames, which reportedly started on the restaurant floor around 3:30am. Survivors have recounted the horror of the incident, stating that there were no fire alarms, fire doors, or safe exit routes, forcing many to jump from windows to escape the inferno. Experts have highlighted inadequacies in the hotel's fire extinguishing systems, fire detectors, and emergency exits, raising questions about the effectiveness of fire safety protocols in place.

The Turkish government has faced mounting pressure to scrutinize fire safety in old structures, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declaring a day of national mourning. The nation has come together to observe a day of mourning, as grieving families bid farewell to their loved ones. Several funerals have been held, including one attended by President Erdogan, who has been criticized by opposition leaders for the high number of fatalities.

Ozgur Ozel, leader of the main opposition CHP party, has expressed outrage over the tragedy, stating that "there is no excuse for such a high number of deaths in 2025." The incident has sparked a national debate about fire safety and emergency preparedness, with many calling for stricter regulations and enforcement to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As the investigation into the hotel fire continues, the people of Turkey remain in a state of mourning, seeking answers and demanding action to ensure that such a devastating tragedy never occurs again. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing fire safety and emergency preparedness, not only in Turkey but also around the world.
