Meta Denies Forcing Users to Follow Trump Officials' Accounts

Updated :

Amidst controversy surrounding its handling of official government accounts, Meta has rejected claims that it is forcing users to follow the social media accounts of senior Trump administration figures on Facebook and Instagram.

The issue arose when users reported being automatically added to the accounts of President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and First Lady Melania Trump after the presidential inauguration. However, a Meta spokesperson explained that this was a routine transition process, and the White House had updated the accounts to reflect the new officials. The accounts, which include handles like @POTUS and @FLOTUS, were previously managed by the previous administration and have been archived.

Meta's Andy Stone clarified that it may take some time for follow and unfollow requests to be processed as the accounts change hands. Despite this, some Instagram users have complained about being unable to unfollow the accounts of the Trump administration officials, with some claiming that Meta is automatically refollowing the accounts despite their attempts to unfollow them. Meta has denied these accusations, stating that users are not forced to follow the official accounts for the President, Vice President, or First Lady.

The controversy surrounding Meta's handling of official government accounts is not isolated, as the company has faced criticism over its handling of the Republican party, including complaints of censorship. Experts point to the appointment of Donald Trump supporter Dan Scavino as a member of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's board of directors and the introduction of new content guidelines as evidence of a shift towards a right-wing approach.

As Meta navigates the complex landscape of social media and politics, the company must balance its commitment to free speech with the need to maintain a neutral and respectful platform for all users. The recent controversy highlights the challenges faced by social media companies in managing official government accounts and ensuring that users' preferences are respected.
