Pakistan's first trackless, ticketless, and solar-powered metro system, the Super Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (SRT) system, is set to transform the city's public transportation landscape, with a pilot project launched near Lahore Airport to test the innovative technology.

The SRT system, described as a "subway on wheels," uses Virtual Track Technology to operate on regular roads, eliminating the need for physical rails. This modern and flexible solution requires minimal infrastructure demands, making it an ideal choice for Pakistan's urban transportation development. The system has been successfully implemented in China, Malaysia, UAE, and Turkey, and is expected to set a new standard for future mass transit projects in Pakistan.

In addition to the SRT system, Lahore is also set to launch Pakistan's first electric tram service, with the government ordering electric trams from China. The trams can travel 25-27 kilometers after 10 minutes of charging and carry up to 250 passengers. The initial trial route will run from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura, and the service will be free of cost initially. The trams are being assembled at the Ali Town Depot and are expected to start as a pilot project.

The introduction of electric trams is part of Punjab's five-year transport modernisation strategy, which includes the introduction of Automated Rapid Transit (ART) systems in major urban centers and smaller cities across the province. The ART system features trackless electric buses with onboard Wi-Fi, CCTV surveillance, and rapid charging capabilities. The government aims to introduce the ART system in 10 cities over three phases, beginning with Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala.

The launch of these innovative transportation systems marks a significant milestone in Pakistan's urban transportation development, and is expected to provide a modern and efficient public transportation system for the citizens of Lahore and other cities in the province.
