Historic flash floods in Ruidoso, New Mexico, have resulted in three deaths and left one person missing, prompting the village mayor to discourage visitors from visiting the area. The floods, triggered by 2-3 inches of rainfall on the South Fork burn scar, have caused widespread destruction, with approximately 65 water rescues conducted and 12 roads remaining closed.
The outdoor warning system was not activated, as it is reserved for full town evacuations, but the village's multi-layered alert system, including Call Me Ruidoso and IPAWS, was used to send alerts to residents and visitors. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is set to arrive in Ruidoso, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has also called the mayor to offer support. The village has reported several power outages, and donations of cleaning goods and supplies can be dropped off at the Humane Society Resale shop.
A security camera captured floodwaters rushing into The Ruidoso Trading Post, giving a glimpse into the severity of the situation. The floodwaters rose to a record 20 feet, sweeping the victims downstream. Emergency crews are still conducting search and rescue operations, and the Village of Ruidoso is working with authorities to investigate the incident and provide support to the affected families.
As the village prepares for potential further rainfall on Wednesday, residents and visitors are advised to remain cautious and follow evacuation instructions. The community is coming together to support those affected, with monetary donations being accepted by the Community Foundation of Lincoln County.
