Scratch Beneath Surface of Gangrape Case
The gangrape case has raised concerns about the safety and security of students, particularly women, in educational institutions. The incident has also highlighted the need for prompt and effective action against those accused of such crimes, without any attempts to downplay or trivialized the severity of the incident.
A disturbing gangrape case at South Calcutta Law College has sparked widespread outrage, with four men, including a TMC youth leader, accused of assaulting the victim. CCTV footage reveals one of the accused buying an inhaler for the victim, who was experiencing breathlessness during the assault, while the victim's medical report shows struggle marks on the prime accused.
The police investigation is ongoing, with 16 individuals, including students and staff members, questioned and three men and a security guard arrested. The accused have been remanded in police custody till July 8. The evidence collected so far aligns with the victim's complaint, and the police are working to ensure that justice is served.
However, the case has taken a political turn, with West Bengal Minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia's remark that a "small incident" was being made into a big deal sparking outrage. Although he later clarified that his remark was not related to the Kasba gang rape incident, the Trinamool Congress leadership defended him, saying his speech was "maliciously taken out of context, misquoted, and circulated to mislead viewers". The West Bengal BJP has targeted Bhunia and other TMC leaders for their remarks, accusing them of "normalisation of sexual assault".
The TMC has distanced itself from the remarks made by some of its leaders and has issued a show cause to one of them. As the investigation continues, it is essential to ensure that the case is not politicized and that justice is served without any interference or influence.
