Gary Kirsten Resigns as Pakistan Coach Amid 'Irreconcilable Differences'

Updated :

In a surprise move, Gary Kirsten has resigned as the head coach of Pakistan's ODI and T20I teams, just six months into the role, citing "irreconcilable differences" with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Kirsten's resignation comes amidst a rift that developed between him and newly-appointed coach Mickey Arthur, as well as the PCB, over the board's decision to strip them of selection powers and bring in a new selection committee. The tension boiled over when the PCB announced the appointment of Mohammad Rizwan as the new limited-overs captain without seeking Kirsten's input, reportedly leaving him disappointed and frustrated. This ousting marked a significant shift of power within the team, which ultimately contributed to Kirsten's decision to step down, effectively ending his tenure before he had the chance to coach the team in action in the format where he achieved his greatest success.

In a move that has left cricket observers questioning the timing, Kirsten has been succeeded by interim white-ball coach, Jason Gillespie, the current red-ball coach, who will oversee the upcoming tour of Australia. This choice was made on short notice, but appears to be a familiar one, given Gillespie's already established participation in team decisions. The decision may seem abrupt given that Pakistan is set to host the ICC Champions Trophy in December, a major tournament that typically receives intense preparation and planning. Demand is high for leaps in performance, especially after recent underwhelming performances, such as the loss in the T20 World Cup against the USA and against arch-rivals India.

As one era closes, another begins for Pakistan cricket, but how this change will transpire remains uncertain, especially amidst intense scrutiny.
