Syed Waqar Mehdi, the candidate from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has won the by-election for the vacant Senate seat from Sindh province, securing 111 votes out of 149 cast during the polling time.
The by-election was held on May 6, 2025, at the Sindh Assembly building, which was designated as the polling station. The seat became vacant after the death of PPP's Senator Taj Haider, who was elected for a six-year term in March 2021. The winner, Syed Waqar Mehdi, will serve as a member of the Senate for approximately two years until March 2027.
Provincial Election Commissioner Ejaz Anwar Chohan reviewed the arrangements for the by-election, ensuring transparency, fairness, and peace. The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) boycotted the polling process and did not field a candidate. Nighat Mirza from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) received 36 votes, making Syed Waqar Mehdi the clear winner.
The by-election was conducted smoothly, with polling scheduled from 9am to 4pm without a break. The results have been announced, and Syed Waqar Mehdi has been declared the winner, marking a significant victory for the PPP in the Sindh province.
