Good Morning, Eric Dane Opens Up About ALS Diagnosis
Eric Dane's courageous battle with ALS serves as a reminder of the importance of living in the present and cherishing time with loved ones. As he navigates this challenging journey, his story is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for resilience and hope.

Eric Dane, 52, a former Grey's Anatomy star, has revealed in a taped interview with Good Morning America that he has been living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) since his diagnosis in April, and has lost use of his right arm.
Dane emotionally described an incident where he went swimming and was rescued by his 13-year-old daughter after he realized he didn't have the strength to continue. He also spoke about his friendship with his separated wife, Rebecca Gayheart, saying they have become better friends and parents since his diagnosis. Dane has two daughters, ages 13 and 15, and expressed concern that he may be taken from them while they are still young.
ALS is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing a loss of muscle control, and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is 2-5 years. Dane's interview is part of a two-part segment that will air on GMA, with the second part featuring Dane and his physician. He shares that he wakes up every day reminded of his condition, but believes it's not the end of his story.
Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy, said he first experienced weakness in his right hand over a year ago, but it wasn't until a few months ago that he received the diagnosis. He has lost function of his right arm and worries about losing the use of his left hand and legs. Despite the average prognosis for ALS patients, Dane is focused on spending time with his family and continuing to work.
Dane's determination to not let the disease define him is inspiring, and his interview with Diane Sawyer will air on Good Morning America, where he will discuss his journey with ALS and his plans for the future. His wife, Rebecca Gayheart, is his "biggest champion" and he credits her with being his most stalwart supporter.
