Shubman Gill has been named the new captain of the Indian national cricket team, succeeding Rohit Sharma, and will lead the team in the upcoming five-Test series against England starting June 20. Gill, a top-order batter, has played 32 Tests for India, scoring 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 with five tons.

The Indian squad for the series against England has undergone significant changes, with Shreyas Iyer being left out due to the need for experience in the Test team, particularly with Virat Kohli not available. Karun Nair, who has been in consistent form in domestic cricket, has been included in the squad after a seven-year gap. Mohammed Shami was not included due to fitness issues, and left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh made his Test debut.

Ajit Agarkar, BCCI chief selector, stated that Karun's experience and recent form made him a better choice for the Test team. All-rounder Shardul Thakur and Nitish Reddy were also included in the squad, with Agarkar backing them to shine in England. The squad also includes KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah, as well as returning players like Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur.

Rishabh Pant has been named as Gill's vice-captain, and the team is expected to perform well under the new leadership. With the series against England starting soon, the Indian team will look to make a strong impression under the captaincy of Shubman Gill.
