Roston Chase has been appointed as the new West Indies Test captain, marking an "extraordinary milestone" for Barbados, according to Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who praised Chase's dedication and hard work, highlighting the country's rich cricket history.

Chase, 33, was chosen after a rigorous six-month interview process, taking over from Kraigg Brathwaite, who resigned earlier this year. This marks the 10th time a Barbadian has captained the West Indies team, with all senior teams now led by a Barbadian. Mottley emphasized that Chase's appointment is a testament to his character and commitment, and that Barbados' ability to produce great leaders is a key factor in its success.

The 33-year-old all-rounder has played 49 Tests, scoring 2,265 runs at an average of 26.33 and taking 85 wickets. His first assignment as captain will be a three-Test series against Australia starting on June 25. Chase will be vice-captained by Jomel Warrican. Mottley cited notable Barbadian captains such as Teddy Hoad, Frank Worrell, and Garry Sobers, highlighting the country's rich cricket history.

As Chase prepares to lead the West Indies team, he will be looking to draw on the country's rich cricketing heritage and the values of discipline, dignity, and quiet determination that Mottley praised. With the support of his team and the nation, Chase will be aiming to make a strong start as captain and bring success to the West Indies team.
