Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par Takes Unconventional Route

The pay-per-view model is expected to create a new revenue stream for filmmakers and provide audiences with more flexibility in how they consume films, potentially changing the way movies are released and consumed in India. Aamir Khan's decision to opt for this model with Sitaare Zameen Par is a significant development in the Indian film industry.

Aamir Khan's upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par, will skip the traditional OTT release and instead opt for a pay-per-view model on YouTube two months after its theatrical debut, aiming to create a cinema-like urgency and benefit both viewers and producers.

The film, a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par, is set to release in theaters on June 20, and Aamir hopes it will be a more successful outing after the debacle of his last release, Laal Singh Chaddha. This decision comes after Aamir expressed his dissatisfaction with the common practice of releasing films on OTT platforms eight weeks after their theatrical run, which he believes discourages viewers from watching movies in theaters.

Sitaare Zameen Par marks a unique record for Aamir, who has never starred in a sequel of his own film. However, the film is not a direct sequel to Taare Zameen Par, but shares a similar theme. It is an official Hindi remake of the 2018 Spanish film 'Campeones' and is also a sequel to the film. The film is directed by RS Prasanna and also stars Genelia Deshmukh, Brijendra Kala, and 10 new actors.

With this unconventional release strategy, Aamir Khan's production house aims to create a new benchmark for film releases in India, and the success of Sitaare Zameen Par will be closely watched by the industry. The film's theatrical release on June 20 will be followed by its pay-per-view release on YouTube two months later, giving audiences a unique opportunity to experience the film in a new way.
