Zafar Masud, a survivor of the 2020 PIA plane crash in Karachi, has shared his experiences in his memoir "Seat 1C: A Survivor's Tale of Hope, Resilience, and Renewal", co-written with Syeda Amna Hasan, which was launched at the Lahore Literary Festival.
The book chronicles Zafar's journey from the brink of despair to a renewed sense of purpose, highlighting his transformation from a rigid individual to one who embodies empathy and understanding. Masud attributed his survival to God's will, not his seat location, and wrote the book to share his unique experiences and help others improve their lives. The narrative explores Zafar's psychological and physical struggles after the crash, including survivor's guilt and his belief in being granted a second chance at life.
The book also delves into the role of Zafar's family in his resilience, illustrating how love and support can forge an indomitable spirit in the face of adversity. Syeda Amna Hasan, the co-author, filled in gaps in Masud's memories and incorporated accounts from Zubair, the other survivor, eyewitnesses, and paramedics, as well as using cockpit recordings and CAA details to make the story more real. Masud acknowledged Amna's contribution to the book, saying she made it an interesting read with her language.
