FIA DG Removed: Govt Takes Action Against Ahmed Ishaque Jehangir

Updated :

The federal government has removed FIA Director General Ahmed Ishaque Jehangir and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Akhtar Hayat due to administrative failures, citing slow response to human trafficking cases and deteriorating security in K-P.

The removal of Jehangir comes amid criticism over the FIA's handling of human trafficking cases, including the recent boat tragedy off the Moroccan coast. He has been reassigned to an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Establishment Division. The government has begun shortlisting candidates for the new FIA chief, following the removal of Jehangir, who was a BS-21 officer of the Interior Division.

Additionally, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IGP Akhtar Hayat has been replaced by Zulfiqar Hameed, who was previously serving as the additional IG Special Branch in Punjab. The federal government issued two separate notifications, directing Akhtar Hayat to report to the Establishment Division and notifying Zulfiqar Hameed as the new IGP in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The move is seen as an effort to address the rising violence in Kurram and improve the overall security situation in the province.

The action against FIA officials suspected of involvement in the Greece boat tragedy has also led to the dismissal of 37 officials, with 13 being fired, including eight constables, two head constables, one inspector, and two sub-inspectors. Furthermore, 65 FIA officials have been blacklisted for posting at immigration checkposts and anti-human trafficking circles in the country. The government's decision to remove Jehangir and Hayat is expected to lead to further changes within the FIA and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police.

The removal of the FIA DG and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IGP is a significant development in the government's efforts to address administrative failures and improve the response to human trafficking cases and security concerns. The appointment of new officials is expected to bring about positive changes in the FIA and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police, and the government's actions will be closely watched in the coming days.
