Antony's Transfer to Real Betis Held Up by Amorim
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is blocking the transfer of winger Antony to Real Betis until he is satisfied with a replacement for the Brazilian player, despite the La Liga side having agreed a deal with Manchester United and Antony.
Antony has made only three starts this season, none in the Premier League, and Amorim is prioritizing the team's attacking options in the transfer market. The transfer is expected to be finalized, but Amorim's decision is holding up the move, with Real Betis waiting for Antony to travel to Seville for medical tests. Manchester United's Antony is set to join Real Betis on loan until the end of the season, after a disappointing two-year stint at Old Trafford, during which he scored 12 goals in 96 appearances.
Antony's signing in 2022 was a high-profile move, with United paying £81.3m for the winger, making him their second most expensive player of all time. Despite initial promise, Antony failed to meet expectations, and his form continued to decline under manager Erik ten Hag and later Ruben Amorim. He was criticized for his lack of goal-scoring and assist contributions, and was often left out of the starting lineup.
The loan deal will last until June 2025 without a buy option, with the Spanish club covering 84% of the Brazilian's £200,000-per-week salary. This move comes after United held talks with Lecce over a deal for defender Patrick Dorgu, with the Italian club wanting £33m for the player who is one of United's options to strengthen their squad.
The transfer of Antony to Real Betis is expected to be completed once Amorim is satisfied with the team's attacking options, and the Brazilian player will look to revive his career in La Liga after a disappointing stint in the Premier League.
